Foreclosures lead to abandoned animals

By EVELYN NIEVES, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 23 minutes ago

STOCKTON, Calif. - The house was ravaged — its floors ripped, walls busted and lights smashed by owners who trashed their home before a bank foreclosed on it. Hidden in the wreckage was an abandoned member of the family: a starving pit bull.

The dog found by workers was too far gone to save — another example of how pets are becoming the newest victims of the nation's mortgage crisis as homeowners leave animals behind when they can no longer afford their property.

Pets "are getting dumped all over," said Traci Jennings, president of the Humane Society of Stanislaus County in northern California. "Farmers are finding dogs dumped on their grazing grounds, while house cats are showing up in wild cat colonies."
...
Despite months of warning before a foreclosure, many desperate homeowners run out the clock hoping to forestall an eviction. Then they panic, particularly if they are moving to a home where pets are not permitted.

What a shame indeed. Everything under GWB's adminstration has fallen by the wayside. The economy is only benefiting the rich. I am beyond belief when my savings account earns a percentage of less than 1 percent. Yet, to borrow from the bank the interest rate is 8% or more. Then they tack on a fee for processing your loan and whatever else they can get away with. When a person buys a home the interest made off the loan is almost 2 1/2 times the amount loaned....pretty good payback.

I live in a townhome and have an association. I have lived here for 15 years and I have never seen mismangement at it's worse. I am going to run for office and as soon as this nasty weather breaks, I'm going around the complex and asking people to vote for me. John Edwards was my inspiration and if I don't stand up for me, who will stand with me?

It is sad when a pet is left behind like the story pointed out, many times the people have nothing of what they started out and they take it out by destroying the home and abandoning their pets... very sad and the owners should be jailed for this act. Cruelty to animals I cannot abide.

There was a story in our paper last week about a couple who went on vacation and had a house sitter for their little Yorkie...the sitter let the dog out unchaperoned and the little fellow never came back. A reward of $5,000 is offered, but I fear the little thing is dead because of the extreme cold weather at the time , or maybe someone picked him up and gave him shelter. I hope that is the case and the people get their dog back. You could tell how much they loved this dog.

It's the economy at it's worse that makes people turn crazy with grief and desperate. I fear more of the same will happen regardless of what party is elected. The only one capable of lifting us up is John Edwards. smile.gif
