Sen. Lindsey Graham defended his conservative credentials today in the wake of Monday night’s censure by the Greenville County Republican Executive Committee.

The panel, made of representatives from each of the county’s precincts, censured Graham for continuing “to adamantly support legalization of illegal immigrants in spite of” thousands of communications of “strong opposition” from local grassroots Republicans.

Graham said, “I can't please everybody. That's impossible. But I know what I am doing and why. I'll put my voting record up against anybody. I think I have made a difference in a positive way. I feel very good about what I have done in the Senate.”

Citing his role in the compromise that led to the confirmations of two U.S. Supreme Court justices, John Roberts and Samuel Alito in 2005, Graham said that no none did more than he did to get them on the court.

These same people would have voted not to censure a president that adamantly defends his use of illegal wiretaps. They would call Russ Feinglod's attempt to censure President Bush political. These people are the ones using censure to express disapproval over his position on an issue where well meaning, intelligent people disagree.

There are appropriate uses of censure and this is not it. When I move to SC I will likely register as an Independent.

Good story, Judy. smile.gif I haven't seen a thing about this. It's certainly significant since it shows how conservative the leadership is at the top of the party in SC. Much like it is here in Texas ~ the Texas GOP is extremely conservative and seemingly out of touch with most Texans.

Interesting that Lindsey is a social conservative, but the immigration issue seems to motivate the Republican base even more at this point. It's such a complex issue, there's an overall frustration with it by everyone. sad.gif

Is it possible that,as much as I don't want to ask the question, that this is more about raceism than it is about the leadership at the top in SC being sooo conservative. If they were sooo Conservative they would have also went after the President on many of the things he has done. I think there is also a portion of the GOP base that has a control of the party that is ruining things.

Lindsey is a social and fiscal/economic conservative. he votes with them most of the time.

I think it's definitely about racism. And fear. But it will be difficult to get anyone to admit it. They'll say instead that these are "illegal" immigrants. Framing it as breaking the law has always seemed like a stretch to me.

There has been a lot of talk about the "criminal" element since all of this came up last year. You know, citing crime stats for illegal immigrants as "proof" of their undesirability and justification for saying bad things about them.

Usually not a bad word mentioned about the "bad" employers who hire them ~ employers who are , in fact, breaking the law. ph34r.gif

It is always difficult to get people to admit when the error is their way of thinking.

There is a criminal element in the group on illegals. However, these people forget about the criminal element in the WH. We need to take care of the illegal employers.
