Bush nearly places Queen Elizabeth in 18th century

By Caren Bohan
1 hour, 40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, no stranger to the occasional verbal misstep, nearly placed Queen Elizabeth II in the 18th century on Monday in welcoming her to the White House on a state visit.
...
Bush noted the queen's long history of dealing with successive American governments, just barely stopping himself before dating her to 1776, the year the 13 British colonies declared their independence from Britain.

Elizabeth has occupied the British throne for 55 years and is 81.

"The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you've come to know very well. After all you've dined with 10 U.S. presidents. You've helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 -- in 1976," Bush said.

Bush looked at the queen sheepishly. She peered back at him from beneath her black and white hat.

"She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child," Bush said as the crowd burst into laughter.

The Chimpster is the one who belongs in the 18th century. Where is that time machine? laugh.gif laugh.gif rolleyes.gif
The Queen has been doing this stuff for 50 years: she'd regard Bush as some vaguely irritating bug easily forgotten about. laugh.gif

laugh.gif Right, Evan. This will be Bush's 1st 'white collar' dinner at the White House, hope he doesn't screw up. I remember when he went to the UK and talked all through dinner, the Queen always takes the lead. Here's hoping they have a lesson in etiquette! rolleyes.gif

I wonder if he'll talk with food in his mouth?? Did you notice that he swiped his nose while he and the Queen were standing at attention on the platform - just like a child would do? I'm sure we'll see that in the days ahead...it was totally goofy. wacko.gif

Queen concludes visit with toast, needle

WASHINGTON - For a very informal president, respite from political woes for George W. Bush came in very formal dinners with Queen Elizabeth II.
...
For the millions who followed the queen's trip to the former British colonies of Virginia and Maryland, to Kentucky and to the current capital, the most memorable moment may have come Monday morning at the White House when Bush winked at Her Majesty.

He had stumbled on a line in his speech, saying that she had helped the United States "celebrate its bicentennial in 17 ..." Bush caught himself and corrected the date to 1976. He paused, winked, and looked to see if the queen had taken offense.

The year 1776 cannot be a favorite year for the queen. It is the year when the monarch at the time of the American Revolution, George III, lost his richest colony.

"She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child," the president said, recovering quickly after the queen had muttered something not picked up by microphones.

1776 is the key, isn't it!?! rolleyes.gif

I'm not surprised to see Nancy Reagan at the table. Now we know where the proper etiquette came from. wink.gif

That is an interesting picture. Maybe they placed Nancy Reagan next to Bush so that she could lean over and slap him if he started to put his foot in his mouth. laugh.gif Of course, all the Republicans are seeking the reflected "Reagan" glory these days. smile.gif

UK - Blundering Bush makes ANOTHER gaffe as he winks at the Queen

By WILLIAM LOWTHER in Washington
Last updated at 11:51am on 8th May 2007

When you've just made it sound like the Queen is more than 200 years old, there may be a few ways of recovering from the gaffe.

But turning to her and giving her a sly wink is probably not included in any book of royal etiquette.
...
The Queen will deliver a keynote speech before heading to a garden party at the British ambassador's residence with Hollywood A-listers expected to be among the 750 guests.

In the evening, Mr Bush will don his white tie and tails for the state dinner as he and the First Lady pull out all the stops to entertain the royals.

It is the first white-tie affair of the Bush administration.

But The New York Times has been pondering: "How does George W Bush, a towel-snapping Texan who puts his feet on the coffee table, drinks water straight from the bottle and was once caught on tape talking with food in his mouth, prepare for a state dinner with the Queen?

"With tips from an etiquette guide, of course - and a little gentle prodding from his wife."

Mr Bush is the leader who once greeted Prime Minister Tony Blair with: "Yo, Blair. How are you doing?"

I'm still thinking...it was Nancy Reagan. smile.gif The pics are good, too!
