Torture in Iraq may be worse now than it was under Saddam Hussein, with militias, terrorist groups and government forces disregarding rules on the humane treatment of prisoners, the U.N. anti-torture chief said Thursday.

Manfred Nowak, the U.N. special investigator on torture, made the remarks as he was presenting a report on detainee conditions at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay as well as to brief the U.N. Human Rights Council, the global body's top rights watchdog, on torture worldwide.

Reports from Iraq indicate that torture "is totally out of hand," he said. "The situation is so bad many people say it is worse than it has been in the times of Saddam Hussein."

Nowak added, "That means something, because the torture methods applied under Saddam Hussein were the worst you could imagine."

We have very stupid people in this country. I have been 'sharing' my thoughts with one of my republican co-workers who thinks it is ok to be killing them as "they came over here and killed us." I will copy the email he sent me and my responses....it will make your hair curl....and it comes from a very intelligent man on top of it who has been so blindsided by the crapola this admin has been force feeding these people.....his best shot to me was about free, fair and open elections. I told him we didn't have free and open elections and if he thought so, he was really uninformed. Gave him some examples and also asked him a question he couldn't answer - "How can you call our elections open and free when it is always the guy with the most $$ behind him who gets on the ballot and wins? What about the good candidates who have limited funds - is that a 'fair' election?" Never got an answer to that one. Everyone should get $2000 and that's it. How they use it is up to them. Cut the media on tv ads, cut the phone banks, junk emails that are packed with untruths...they should be made to quote their sources...would have been interesting to see the 'facts' behind the swift boat ads.

His big deal is just like stupid's - 'we gotta fight them over there so they don't come over here.' This from a man who lives in Detroit next to suburbs called Dearborn and Sterling Heights which have the largest Muslim population in the country. bite me. Bob, my man, they are ALREADY here....it's just a matter of time.

It's sad to know that there are "uninformed" people in Michigan, too.

I just assume everybody is uninformed anymore. Most people watch Fox News. So, until that changes or Fox changes not too much is gonna change about most people's view of the world. It's that old authoritarian mindset that John Dean wrote about.

Maybe you could suggest this book to your co-worker. Have a discussion about it.

However, if Fox and the others have done a good job, he'll just tell you that Dean is a liberal and evil. End of discussion.
