Bush wants to renew Social Security push after vote

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush hopes to revive his plan to overhaul the U.S. Social Security retirement program if his Republican party keeps control of the Congress in the November midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Despite polls suggesting Democrats have their best chance in years to regain control of the House of Representatives, Bush told the newspaper in an interview he was confident a power shift was "not going to happen."

"I just don't believe it," he said, adding that if Republicans prevail at the polls, next year might be a good time to reintroduce the effort to reshape Social Security because he could "drain the politics out of the issue."

He's confident the power shift is not going to happen??? Well, if he's confident and has to say so ~ shouldn't this be the biggest WARNING sign that they're cooking up plans to make sure our votes don't count???

Doesn't he realize how sensitive Democrats are to voting fraud??? What are they up to??? blink.gif

Bush is just talking. Remember how we were all so confident Kerry was going to win in 2004?

The Democrats should be making Social Security a issue this year. We allow the Republicans to sit back and say things like "if the Democrats win, they'll pull out of Iraq and leave America vunerable." We know the general public dislikes Bush's Social Security plan, and considering that most of the Republicans in Congress supported it, we should make it a issue now. Say if the Republicans win, they'll hand over your retirement to the stock market.

How come I haven't heard that argument yet?

I know this doesn't correspond with Social Security, but this topic has me thinking. Why do we allow the Republicans to sit back and say "cut and run" about us all the time? How come we don't fire back? Is it so hard to counter that Republican argument by saying they want to stay and die?

All I know is that most people don't want anyone to touch their Social Security. Republicans just can't imagine how important Social Security is for giving people dignity when they can no longer work. And they say the changes won't affect anyone born before 1950. How stupid is that? Why should we trust them with anything?

I think the past 5 years and recent changes in pension plans have shown people just how vulnerable they are to financial disaster. Social Security should remain intact. I recently read an article that showed how important Social Security even is to people who have substantial savings ~ the need to spread out savings across 30 years (assuming someone could possibly live well into their 90s) which is not so unusual anymore and how Social Security is a very important "supplement" to income. Savings can run out, but Social Security is for the entire lifetime. It's a great program and is not in trouble like they say. They just want to get their hands on our money. Republicans need to get their dirty hands off of it.

And when they say "cut and run" it just makes me sick. I heard Rick Santorum say it last week, again. So easy to throw slogans around. And that may be it, William. Maybe Democrats just don't want to throw slogans around for such serious issues. That somehow cheapens the whole issue. They'll just come up with a bigger and better slogan, anyway ~ and the issue will never receive any discussion. cool.gif

He's talking. I am not sure anyone but the House is on board with an SS push. If this is brought up again it willl go away again becasue Bush is not willing to sacrifice the tax cuts for even his pet project.

I hope you're right. It's a very foolish notion for him to be bringing it up. Did I say "foolish"? Looks like "foolish notions" are something he does very well.

Social Security Enters Elections

Bush remarks please Democrats, perplex Republicans.

More than a year after Social Security reform faded from the political radar screen, the debate erupted anew yesterday, as Democrats seized on news that President Bush hopes to revive an unpopular proposal to make changes in the national retirement program.

In recent days, Bush has said Social Security remains one of the "big items" he wants to tackle next year and he continues to "believe that a worker, at his or her option, ought to be allowed to put some of their own money ... in a private savings account, an account that they call their own."
...

"Just when you thought your Social Security was safe from privatization, George Bush is bringing back his plan to privatize Social Security and cut guaranteed benefits," declared a news release from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the party's fundraising arm for Senate races.

Democratic strategists were gleeful about the chance to draw a sharp distinction between the parties on Social Security, an explosive issue among elderly voters. "I couldn't believe it. What an opening," Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said. "I think he had an out-of-body experience."

Some Republicans were equally perplexed by Bush's timing.

As we've all discussed before, Social Security is Karl Rove's baby. There's a clue right there. Sickening. dry.gif

Good luck with his own party postering 2008 and breaking with him on other issues depending on house or senate it is not likely that anything will be done on this issue. Why? Because Democrats don't want his suggestion and even Republicans (some) are not wanting to do this without paying for it.
