Forgive my ignorance, is this usually a Republican or a Democrat congressional district? And, will all the votes in Ohio be counted this time? rolleyes.gif

70% Republican, apparently. This may be considered a significant sign of the way 2006 will go. Not sure if ALL the votes will be counted, evan. laugh.gif

GOP hangs on to Ohio congressional seat
Republican narrowly defeats Iraq war veteran who criticized Bush

The Associated Press
Updated: 11:19 p.m. ET Aug. 2, 2005

CINCINNATI - A Republican former state lawmaker claimed a seat in Congress on Tuesday by narrowly defeating an Iraq war veteran who drew national attention to the race with his military service and a series of harsh attacks on President Bush.

With all precincts reporting, Jean Schmidt had 52 percent, or 57,974 votes, compared with Democrat Paul Hackett’s 48 percent, or 54,401 votes. Schmidt’s margin of victory amounted to about 3,500 votes out of more than 112,000 cast.

Schmidt, 53, will replace Republican Rob Portman, who stepped down this year after being named U.S. trade representative by Bush. Portman held the seat for 12 years, consistently winning with more than 70 percent of the vote in the Cincinnati-area district.

HEY FOLKS that's a 3.49 margin of victory in OH-2 that has recently gone Repug by more than 50 percentage points! Past results:
2004 72% to 28%
2002 74% to 26%
2000 74% to 23%
1998 76% to 24%.

Here's what the Cook Political Report said (quoted on kos):

"If Schmidt's victory margin is in double digits, this tells us that there is not much of an anti-GOP wind in Ohio right now. If the margin is say six to nine points for Schmidt then there is a wind, but certainly no hurricane. A Schmidt win of less than five points (try 3.49!) should be a very serious warning sign for Ohio Republicans that something is very, very wrong, while a Hackett victory would be a devastating blow to the Ohio GOP".

Considering the turnout percentages quoted above - I would say that Ohio is turning a beautiful purple!! As the writer on kos stated, "As I've been saying since March, we can achieve a victory here even if we don't win outright. And right now (before the election) I'm already feeling like we have."

I would add, I'm beginning to think I may live to see Ohio turn blue!

Absolutely. Looking at the numbers jeebie posted, these counties have been very Republican.

So, it's a beginning. biggrin.gif Maybe there will be a recount. blink.gif

You are right, ncMindy. This only proves that we can be competitive in Republican districts if we stand up for what we believe in. The guy called George Bush a 'SOB' and a 'chicken hawk' and still came within 3000 votes of winning in a heavily conservative area. This, I believe, is a sign of things to come for 2006.

A chicken hawk’

He drew attention to the race with his flame-throwing assaults on Bush, namely for the president’s July 2003 “bring ’em on” comment about Iraqi insurgents. Hackett said such talk merely “cheered on the enemy.”

“That’s the most incredibly stupid comment I’ve ever heard a president of the United States make,” Hackett told USA Today. Hackett has also referred to the president as “a chicken hawk ... a person who advocates war in a cavalier way.”

He is the first candidate to really speak out loud and clear against Bush! And with these comments he came oh, so close. And YOU are right, William. This must be a sign of things to come for 2006. biggrin.gif

Republican Edges Out Iraq Veteran for Ohio Congress Seat

By JAMES DAO

CINCINNATI, Aug 2 - A former Republican state legislator narrowly won a special Congressional election in southern Ohio on Tuesday, ending an underdog bid by her Democratic opponent to become the first combat veteran from the Iraq war to serve in Congress.

With all of the precincts reporting, Jean Schmidt, the Republican, had nearly 52 percent of the vote, edging out her challenger, Paul L. Hackett, a major in the Marine Forces Reserve, by about 4,000 votes.

"Voters declared that they support our president and approve of his leadership," Ms. Schmidt, 53, told supporters gathered at a suburban Holiday Inn late Tuesday evening. "They want us to stay the course so the enemies of freedom cannot bring their terrorism to our shores again."

But Mr. Hackett's showing was unexpectedly strong in this district, a Republican bastion that snakes along the Ohio River from affluent Cincinnati suburbs to struggling Appalachian hamlets. President Bush won the district with 64 percent of the vote last year, and Republicans have held its Congressional seat for two decades.

Schmidt wins tight race
Clermont boosts Republican over Hackett

By Howard Wilkinson
Enquirer staff writer

Republican Jean Schmidt beat Democrat Paul Hackett for the 2nd Congressional District seat Tuesday - though by far less than the GOP had anticipated.

With all precincts reporting, Schmidt had 52 percent of the vote to Hackett's 48 percent - the closest election in the district since 1974.

Democrats - especially the 250 or so Hackett supporters gathered at the Aronoff Center downtown for what they had hoped would be a victory party - tried to pull off an upset that would have shaken national politics to its core.

By running Hackett - an Iraq war veteran who opposed the war - Democrats hoped the race would become a referendum on President Bush, and especially his Iraq policies.

Hackett's strong run, and the support he gained from all over the country, showed that Democrats running in Republican strongholds do not have to pull their horns in, but, instead, can go all out, without having to worry about losing.

Hackett is important in another respect: he is a forceful personality, charismatic, and exudes leadership. His campaign attracted top talent, including Bob Brigham of the Swing State Project. He and his campaign came up with a string of zingers: including "The Culture of Corruption." They were able to pull money, research and volunteerism from across the country. One example? When the Hackett campaign learned that Jean Schmidt was going to deny knowing Tom Noe, they went out and asked the internet for help. And the internet came through for them.

In short, last night's results left the House where it had been the day before; Schmidt, if anything, will be to the right of Portman. However, the implications of an 11% shift in Ohio-2 are massive. A shift of similar proportions across the country would sweep the Republicans from House and Senate in 2006. It would sweep them out of governorships and legislatures.

Not many on the right tooting horns about Hackett today. The emphasis above is mine, this could be the start of a sweep. smile.gif
