U.N. Party Planners Wonder, Will Bush and Friends Attend?

SAN FRANCISCO, May 28 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has indicated she will not attend. So has former President George H. W. Bush. The controversial nominee for United Nations ambassador, John R. Bolton, has not been heard from, nor has President Bush, who was sent an invitation in February.

Getting big-name administration officials to attend events outside Washington is always a long shot because of their busy schedules. But in the case of the 60th anniversary celebration of the founding of the United Nations, which will take place in San Francisco late next month, some organizers are wondering if something beyond scheduling conflicts is at play.

Nancy L. Peterson, president of the United Nations Association of San Francisco, a nonprofit group that has been planning the celebration, said no explanation had been offered by the White House. But she said some members were worried that President Bush's seeming disdain for the world organization might be behind the silence and no-shows.

"We are a month out, and that's cutting it close," Ms. Peterson said. When asked if San Franciscans felt slighted, she said, "I think the administration is slighting the American people by not stepping forward on behalf of the United Nations at this turning point."

I would agree with Ms. Peterson that the UN is being shunned by high officials from the United States, but in the next thought, I wouldn't want them there. GWB has no friends in the UN and maybe his presence there would only worsen our relationship with the UN. Condolisa Rice needs to keep her butt in her office and keep her mouth shut, as well as Cheney, Rumsfeld and any others I might have missed. This administration just pukes mad.gif me. Sorry for such a strong adjective but that is how I feel!

Sure, we are trying to shove Bolton and his baggage on the UN. We have plenty of friends at the UN, right? So our administration will just ignore them until they take Bolton. Another, our way or the highway! The UN sees Bolton as one who will disassemble the UN, that's the world opinion of our reasoning. rolleyes.gif

I don't think that now is the time for celebrating the UN. It is time to talk about either disbanding the UN or radically reforming it.

Oil for food? Silence in Rwanda? Durban? How could you trust an organization that puts Cuba, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Saudi Arabia on its Human Rights Committee?! Surely the pathetic state to which the UN has declined was not the intent of its founders.

The United States is critical to the U.N.'s health and well-being. The Bush administration's constant whining does no good. They just want to weaken it, since world leaders haven't fallen in 'lock-step' with Bush. mad.gif

And insofar as putting Cuba, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia on its Human Rights Committee - isn't that a way to bring countries to the table that have the very issues that need addressing?? Being judgmental about other countries does no good - talking has been known to help bring people together.

Oh, unless of course, a country is intent on ignoring the advice of the U.N. And the U.S. is now among the ones who do. Being the world's example is now difficult at best. Pre-emptive strikes on Iraq and the 'human rights' abuses at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay...

I suppose the U.S. shouldn't be on the Human Rights Committee either. mad.gif
