House Votes to Ease Ban on Hiring Bias

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON, March 2 (AP) - Religious groups participating in federal `job-training` programs could hire people based on their religious beliefs under a jobs bill that narrowly passed the House on Wednesday.

The largely partisan vote of 224 to 200 to extend and rewrite the 1998 Workforce Investment Act came a day after President Bush, in a speech to religious leaders, chided Congress for not acting on his `religion-based` initiatives and criticized a government culture he said was \"unfriendly\" to religious groups.

The White House, in a statement, expressed support for the provision on religious groups, saying that \"receipt of federal funds should not be conditioned on a `faith-based` organization's giving up a part of its religious identity and mission.\"
