Author Now Suspects 'Deep Throat' Was -- Drumroll, Please -- George H.W. Bush

NEW YORK The author of the 1993 biography of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, “Deep Truth,” today named George H.W. Bush the new chief suspect as famed Watergate source Deep Throat.

The “outing” was timed to the opening of the two reporters’ Watergate archives at the University of Texas.

The author of several books for major publishers, Adrian Havill says his claim is based on recent events and his own research at the the National Archives. He announced the “finding” in a letter posted at the Romenesko site at the Poynter Institute.

Havill, author of a book about FBI double agent Robert Hanssen, “The Spy who Stayed Out of the Cold,” formerly believed that the Deep Throat character was a composite of several sources.

Among the suggestive evidence he cited for his new theory:

“Did Bush have motivation? You bet,” Havill wrote. “It was Richard Nixon who urged Bush to leave a safe seat in Congress, hinting there would be a position as assistant Secretary of the Treasury waiting for him if he failed to win a Senate seat held by Ralph Yarborough. When Bush lost, Nixon reneged and asked him to take the U.N. slot instead but teased him by hinting he would be the replacement for Spiro Agnew in 1972. Instead, he was given the thankless task of heading the Republican National Committee in 1973. The elder Bush got his revenge in the end, by standing up at a cabinet meeting in August of 1974 and becoming the first person in Nixon's inner circle to ask the President to resign.

Havill also pointed out that, like Woodward, Bush was a Yalie and a Navy man. And he recalled that Woodward in his 1998 book, “Shadow,” boasted that Bush had aides drop off “classified documents to his home which became the basis of a Washington Post front page story.”

Furthermore, George W. Bush, to the surprise of many, gave Woodward seven hours of interviews and urged his cabinet to cooperate with Woodward on book projects.

As Arsenio Hall used to say long ago... This is something to make you go... mmmmmm.

What really leads me to believe this is true is the interview that Wolf Blitzer did with Woodward this evening. When asked who Deep Throat was, Woodward replied with the old answer of promising not to tell until Deep Throat died...then he added that when that happened everyone would understand why it had been kept secret for so long....

Boston Herald Article

Interesting that CNN reported today that Deep Throat is actually quite ill right now and the obituary has been written. Apparently, Bernstein, Woodward and Bill Bradley (publisher of the Washington Post) are the only three who know Deep Throat's identity.

Ummm...That brings to mind former President Gerald Ford since he is reportedly very frail right now. He couldn't make it to recent events. If he's Deep Throat (or if Bush is going to claim he is) that would be somethin', wouldn't it?

Speculatin' here - but maybe Bush was feeding critical clues to Ford about Watergate and Ford wanted to do the right thing so he went to the press. He has always seemed like a rather unambitious political figure (even though he was the Minority Leader in the House from 1965 to 1973), so maybe he was merely helping ease Nixon out. Several political payoffs all around: Maybe Bush, Sr. helped persuade Nixon to resign with the promise of a pardon; Ford was promised the presidency for pardoning Nixon; Bush's role in all of it was kept completely confidential by Ford and since Ford did the pardoning - he took the political fallout. Oh, and Ford, too, is a Yalie.

President Gerald Ford's Biography

[quote]Ford's reputation for integrity and openness had made him popular during his 25 years in Congress. From 1965 to 1973, he was House Minority Leader. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He starred on the University of Michigan football team, then went to Yale, where he served as assistant coach while earning his law degree. During World War II he attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy. After the war he returned to Grand Rapids, where he began the practice of law, and entered Republican politics. A few weeks before his election to Congress in 1948, he married Elizabeth Bloomer. They have four children: Michael, John, Steven, and Susan.

This continues to become more interesting. Nixon was forced by his own party to resign, there had to be a lot of player's involved. All the player's were high up in government but only a few are sick, could narrow the field. Another continuing saga I would love to see cleared up...it's been like a book with no ending. Could be some political fallout considering all the old player's are still in office, well in Bush's office.

Dumb question here, but could this be the start of the crack in the present admin that may start the dominoes tipping slightly if not yet falling?

I still say that someone, somewhere, knows something really heavy about w and it's just a matter of time before it comes out....and I would lay money on it, it's going to be an act of treason that is exposed.

Rambler Lady, I agree! I've said before on this forum that Bush jnr bears a striking similarity to Nixon. I'm convinced that there will be shock revelations about the activities of this administration in the next 4 years - by 2008, everyone will be begging JRE to become the next president. biggrin.gif 8)

Something like W contributing money to the Taliban AFTER 9/11?!

Or....something like the Bush administration working with groups currently labeled as "terrorist organizations" in Iran to attempt "regime change"?
