Dean Poised to Be New Democratic Party Chief

Fri Feb 4, 3:47 PM ET

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Democratic presidential contender Howard Dean (news - web sites), whose `high-flying` White House bid crashed a year ago, is poised to win the post of party chairman and tackle the job of leading Democrats back from November's election losses.

One week before the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) votes on a new leader, the outspoken former Vermont governor has more than 250 public pledges from DNC supporters, according to the political newsletter Hotline -- well more than the 214 needed to win.

One of Dean's last rivals, Simon Rosenberg, head of the centrist New Democrat Network, dropped his bid on Friday and endorsed Dean. Former Indiana Congressman Tim Roemer and party strategist Donnie Fowler are Dean's last official rivals in what was once a `seven-person` field to succeed DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe.

\"Howard Dean has enough votes to win this thing,\" Rosenberg said. \"It's really now just a question of how this all comes to an end.\"
Rosenberg, Fowler Withdraw Bids, Back Dean

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Activists Simon Rosenberg and Donnie Fowler abandoned their bids for Democratic National Committee chairman on Friday and backed `front-runner` Howard Dean, moving the former presidential candidate closer to capturing the party title.

Rosenberg's departure from the race leaves a field of two - Dean and former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer.

About 430 voting members of the party's national committee will choose a successor to outgoing DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe on Feb. 12.

Dean surged into the lead with 250 endorsements from DNC members, but some Democrats are worried about Dean's `at-times` fiery comments and style. Rosenberg stressed Dean's success in rallying Democratic support and his ability to unify the party.

Dean Opponent Bows Out of Chairman's Race

Mon Feb 7,12:47 PM ET Elections - AP

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Tim Roemer, the only remaining opponent of Howard Dean (news - web sites) in the race to be chairman of the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites), said Monday he's bowing out of the race — but he offered a warning to Democrats.

Dean, the former presidential candidate and governor of Vermont, is expected to win the DNC chairmanship at the election Feb. 12.

Roemer, a former congressman from Indiana and a member of the Sept. 11 commission, said Democrats must be more inclusive in their outreach to `fast-growing` parts of the country.

"I got into this race five weeks ago to talk about the devastating loss we experienced in November," Roemer said in an interview. "It was not about 60,000 votes in Ohio. It was about losing 97 of the 100 fastest growing counties in the country. If that's a trend in business or politics you're in trouble."
Dean has said he will focus his efforts as chairman more on building the party at the local, state and national level, raising money and winning elections, while elected officials will be more responsible for policy positions.
Sounds good to me. Elected officials being responsible is at the top of my list.

Well, all I can say is the Usher quote that EdwardsGrrl sometimes uses in her signature, to wit:

Ok, I guess I need an update - - Is Dean the only left standing now? I just got an email from Hillary and she is 'throwing' her support behind Dr. Dean, the next DNC chair.....

The 'election' is this weekend isn't it? Oh, I am so old and confused.......

Yes, Dean is the last candidate standing. So unless he gets hit by a bus or something, he will be the new DNC Chair. I hope he and Harry Reid can work together to complete the backbone transplant the Democratic Party so desperately needs.

RL, I believe the official vote in on the 12th...which would indeed be this weekend.

I think that Dean is the only one left standing, so to speak....Frost, Rosenberg, Fowler, Roemer and Webb have dropped out....so unless there is some great conspiracy with a magnificent stealth plan, we can assume that Dean, is indeed, the new DNC chair.
