Scalia to be recommended as Chief Justice should current Chief Justice William Rehnquist retire.
Justice Scalia is out of step with the American people and is one of the Court's most virulent opponents of a woman's right to choose. More than 60% of Americans think that Bush should nominate justices who support Roe v. Wade. If Bush chooses Scalia, he would widen the already gaping political divide in our country.
NARAL `Pro-Choice` America is trying to stop this nomination before it's even announced. It's going to be difficult to win this fight against Scalia in the Senate - with your help, we can keep this nomination from ever coming to a Senate vote.
Here's what we need you to do today:
1. Urge President Bush to nominate a moderate for Chief Justice. Nominating a moderate would save the country from a divisive and destructive fight.
2. Ask Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (`D-NV`) to stand firm against any attempt to elevate Scalia to Chief Justice. On December 5, Reid stated that he could support Justice Scalia's nomination. Help us send messages to Reid urging that he oppose any change in Scalia's role on the Court.
While I wish this were not occurring (I've also heard it may be Justice Thomas, who parrots Justice Scalia's votes), Reid will not oppose it. Many Nevadans are liberitarian (sp) by nature, meaning more strict interpretations of the Constitution (despite prostitution practically legal there); moreover, Reid is NOT `pro-choice`. In my view, ones to lobby are Durbin, Leahy, Schumer, and Feingold, possibly Specter (if you live in Pennsylvania).

I think Reid still needs to be contacted by us. He is the new leader, and I really think we ought to send him a message, as well as the other representatives. But I don't think it's a good idea to discount Reid just because he is not `pro-choice`. If anything, he needs to hear more from `pro-choice` Americans.

I agree, Patty. We need to contact Reid. He'll be the leader and he needs to know how members of his party feel about this. Now that he's going to be the Senate minority leader, he doesn't just represent Nevada. He has to represent all of us. And he needs to know we expect him not to act like a wimp.
