The Des Moines Register reports that Gov. Tom Vilsack, eyeing a potential 2008 White House bid, appears to be following a path set by former Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Vilsack "has built a healthy relationship with influential moderate Democrats nationally, just as `then-Arkansas` Gov. Clinton did before seeking the presidency in 1992." Vilsack attended a weekend retreat in Colorado put on by the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, which Clinton once led. "What has been interesting to me has been the recognition by many `high-ranking` Democratic elected officials that the Democratic Party needs to reach beyond the two coasts and needs to embrace the values system, the philosophy, programs and polices being adopted in the heartland," Vilsack told the paper.
